Battery Storage
Make your home more resilient during power outages and make the most of your solar electricity system.
Make your home more resilient during power outages and make the most of your solar electricity system.
Battery storage offers a convenient and easy way to provide electricity to your home in a power outage.
Take the stress out of electrical outages by having a backup source of power
Battery storage systems can generate additional credits or payments from your utility
Power is stored in an inconspicuous box attached to the wall and doesn’t require separate fuel, need mechanical upkeep, or produce on-site emissions
Charge your battery with solar electricity and then use the battery during times when the solar panels aren’t producing energy
The battery is charged by solar electricity if you have solar panels, or by utility-supplied electricity if you don’t. If the battery is paired with solar electricity, energy generated during the daytime and stored can be used to power your house at night. You can work with an installer to size a battery storage system to best fit your house’s needs and to power critical loads, such a a refrigerator, in an electric outage.
Important: If you have a solar electric system and want to power portions of your home and/or re-charge your home battery with solar energy
during a power outage, talk to your installer about islanding capability.

ConnectedSolutions: Earn incentives for allowing your utility to draw energy stored in your battery during times of peak electricity demand. A battery capable of a 5-kW continuous contribution will earn $1,375/year participating in summer events.
SMART Battery Adder Clean Peak Energy Standard: If you’ve installed a home battery with your solar electric system, you may earn additional revenue under the SMART program.
Battery must have at least 3 kWh capacity to receive 30% Federal Tax Credit
Mass Save® HEAT Loan: Up to $25,000 at 0% interest over terms of up to 7 years if battery is enrolled in ConnectedSolutions.
Example up-front cost before incentives
$10,000
Example cost after Massachusetts incentives and Federal Tax Credits:
$7,000
Would you like more flexible, clean options to power your home?
Battery storage is used to power homes during a utility outage or at night if excess electricity has been generated by your solar panels during the day.
Do you already have a solar electric system?
Battery storage complements solar electricity. Electricity created from the solar panels can be stored and then used at night or during power outages. During a multi-day power outage, solar panels can recharge your battery if the system is configured with islanding capacity. Talk to your installer about how to configure your solar panels and battery storage to best fit your needs.
Do you have frequent power outages?
Battery storage is a lower-maintenance, cleaner way to provide electricity to your home during a power outage compared to using a diesel or propane-fueled generator.
Would you like to earn some extra revenue through clean energy solutions?
Battery storage systems can generate additional credits from your utility when paired with a solar electricity system, and can provide an opportunity for payments from your utility when the battery is dispatched at times of peak energy use by the grid.
Do you anticipate needing to keep your refrigerator and other essentials running during an outage?
Depending on your electricity consumption during the outage and the storage capacity of your batteries, you may be able to power essential loads for one or even two days with a residential battery.
Pledge to reduce your home’s carbon footprint by replacing old systems and appliances with clean energy technologies over time.
We recommend selecting ground-source heat pump installers from the Mass Save Heat Pump Installer Network (HPIN).
Customers of Berkshire Gas, Cape Light Compact, Eversource, Liberty Utilities, National Grid, and Unitil are eligible for Mass Save ground-source heat pump rebates and financing offers, which are accessed by using an HPIN installer.
Customers of Municipal Light Plants (MLPs) can also use installers in the HPIN, though rebates and financing offers will be determined by your MLP.
